A congenital heart defect (CHD) is a defect in the structure of the heart and great vessels which is present at birth. Heart defects are among the most common birth defects and are the leading cause of birth defect-related deaths. Many defects don’t need treatment, but some complex congenital heart defects require medication or surgery. According to reliable statistics, there are almost 85 such defects that can be treated through surgery. Out of these, few are relatively less complicated, whereas rest are structurally more complicated and require professional expertise and expensive treatment. If a small hole in the heart is not diagnosed at an appropriate time, can prove fatal in later part of life. So, diagnosis at an early stage and surgery at the appropriate time is of much importance.
This can ensure the success of treatment in terms of symptom relief and longevity of life. In case surgery is delayed, the disease would start affecting the lungs and reducing the chances of success of surgery. In every 1000 live borne babies, 11 are suffering from defects in their hearts. The treatment of such children is difficult, sensitive and expensive. Experts in this discipline are few in Pakistan and the resources needed for the treatment are meagre in terms of hospitals, equipment and professionals.
As a result, there is a huge number of children with congenital heart defects in our country waiting for their treatment, either getting inoperable (unfit for treatment as the time passes) or dying at home in this process. Consequently, this has taken on the proportion of a huge medico-social challenge at a national level, for the patients of congenital heart defects in Pakistan.
Al-Akhyar Foundation not only provides financial assistance to the individuals for complete surgical procedure (including hospital charges, laboratory investigations, 2-D-Echo fee, angiography procedure charges and so on) but it also ensures that the patient is kept for treatment in the best hospitals of Lahore.
